Outdoor headshot photographer in London: why natural light works
An outdoor headshot photographer in London gives you portraits that look like a person, not a passport photo. On 24 May 2025 I shot Layla’s headshots in Bishops Park, natural light, no studio, no forced smile. Two relaxed hours by the river in Fulham and a set of portraits that actually looked like her. If you’re deciding between a studio backdrop and shooting outside, here’s why the park often wins.
Why choose outdoor headshots over a studio?
Because daylight is flattering and people relax outside. A studio can feel clinical, and it shows on the face. Put someone under trees with soft afternoon light and their shoulders drop, which is exactly what a good headshot needs.
For Layla’s session the green backdrop of Bishops Park did half the work. Clean, calm, and a bit warmer than any grey studio wall.
What makes Bishops Park good for portraits?
Shade and water, plus room to move. The park runs along the Thames near Putney Bridge, so you get tree cover for soft light and open stretches for cleaner backgrounds. Early evening the light comes in low and gold along the river path.
I like shooting here because you can move through three or four completely different looks in one walk without anyone feeling rushed.
How long does an outdoor headshot session take?
Around two hours is plenty. Layla’s ran about that long, which gave time to warm up, try a few backgrounds, and catch the good light without clock-watching. Rushing a portrait shows immediately in the eyes.
That window also covers a couple of outfit changes if you want range for different uses, LinkedIn, a website bio, press.
Who are outdoor headshots right for?
Anyone who wants a professional portrait that doesn’t feel stiff. Founders, creatives, actors, consultants. LemonLens shoots portrait sessions both in studio and on location across London, and I match the setting to the person. Bishops Park and the wider Fulham area are on my doorstep, so South West London sessions are easy to book.
FAQ
How much does an outdoor headshot session cost in London?
Location headshot sessions are priced per booking based on time and how many final images you want retouched. An outdoor session is comparable to studio pricing, sometimes simpler since there’s no studio hire. Get in touch and I’ll quote for what you need.
What should I wear for outdoor headshots?
Solid colours that aren’t pure white or busy patterns work best against greenery. Bring two or three options. Layla brought a small edit of outfits and we shot the strongest against the softest light in the park.
What if it rains?
We reschedule or move under cover. London weather is what it is, so I keep outdoor sessions flexible on timing. Overcast days are actually great for portraits, soft, even light with no harsh shadows.
Where in London do you shoot outdoor portraits?
Parks and green spaces citywide, with Bishops Park, Fulham Palace gardens, and the Thames path close to the studio. I also shoot in Greenwich, Hampstead Heath, and Victoria Park depending on the look you’re after.
