Christening photographer in London: ceremony and family portraits

A christening photographer in London covers a ceremony and a family reunion rolled into one short morning. On 10 May 2026 I photographed a christening at St Mary’s Church in The Boltons, Chelsea, two to three hours across the ceremony and family portraits, followed by lunch at the Hollywood Arms nearby. Christenings gather people who rarely stand in one room together, so the photos matter for years. Below is how I cover a christening so nothing important slips by.

What does christening coverage include?

The ceremony and its key moments, plus family portraits afterwards. For the St Mary’s christening that meant the service itself, the moment at the font, and then organised family groups plus relaxed candids. The mix gives parents both the record and the keepsakes.

Family portraits are a big part of the value, since a christening is often the one day extended family all show up.

How do you photograph a church ceremony respectfully?

Quietly, and by the church’s rules. Ceremonies have their own etiquette, so I shoot discreetly, stay out of the aisle, and never intrude on the service. Available light and a low profile keep the focus where it belongs.

St Mary’s in The Boltons is a beautiful, calm church, and shooting it softly kept that atmosphere in the images.

How do you handle family portraits and children?

Fast and warm, and organised above all. Group portraits with a baby and lots of relatives can descend into chaos, so I keep them quick and clearly directed. Get the essential groups first, before anyone drifts to lunch, then let the candids happen naturally.

With young children in the mix, you need patience and speed in equal measure, because you either catch the moment or you miss it.

Who books christening photography?

Parents, godparents, and families marking a baptism or naming. LemonLens covers christenings and family occasions across London as part of our event photography, and it links to family portrait sessions. Chelsea, Kensington, and West London churches are all close to base.

FAQ

How much does a christening photographer cost in London?

Christening coverage is priced by hours, usually two to three for the ceremony and family portraits. It’s an affordable way to properly record a family occasion. Send me your date and I’ll quote.

Can you cover the lunch or reception afterwards?

Yes, if you want it. The Chelsea christening moved on to lunch at the Hollywood Arms, and I can extend coverage to include the meal and celebration beyond the church.

Will you organise the family group photos?

Yes. I keep group portraits quick and clearly directed so you get every essential combination without anyone standing around, then capture the candids naturally.

Which London churches do you cover for christenings?

Churches across the city, with Chelsea and Kensington especially close, and West London too. St Mary’s in The Boltons and similar venues are regular ground.
